GARTH, RUSSELL, 96, of
Louisville, died Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Jefferson Place. Born in
Trenton, KY, he received a baccalaureate degree from Georgetown College and a
master's degree from Columbia University. He began his teaching and coaching
career at Mason High School in Grant County, KY, and moved to Louisville Junior
High School in 1936. At du Pont Manual High School from 1941 to 1955, he served
as dean of boys, athletic director and assistant principal. He was the
principal of Atherton High School from 1955-1970. He had been inducted into the
Hall of Fame at both Manual and Atherton. He was also a lifelong athlete. At
Georgetown, he lettered in four sports: basketball, baseball, tennis and as a
manager of the football team. An avid golfer and bridge player, he continued to
enjoy both during an active retirement life. He was a Mason and a member of
Beargrass Christian Church, River Road Country Club and the Retired Teacher's
Association. Mr. Garth was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lorana
Young. He is survived by his two sons, Russell Y. Garth (Judi) of Arlington,
VA, and Dale N. Garth (Robyn) of Dedham, MA; six grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, February
15, 2005, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial in Cave Hill
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Monday. Memorial gifts may go to
Beargrass Christian Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

¹ Courtney Noe was reported deceased on the 2001 reunion list. That was
an error. His obituary was in the paper on 3/12/2002. Cecil Thompson was also
incorrectly listed as deceased. He is alive and well. We sincerely regret both
of these errors.
