After graduating from Atherton, I enrolled at University of Kentucky for one year.  I enlisted in the Army for eight years, while stationed in Germany, Neckarsulm and Nuremberg, I was able to visit several countries and cities and enjoyed what the locals enjoyed.  I also had a short assignment at the Suez Canal for three months.

Back state side I enrolled and graduated from Western Kentucky University with my BS in Business Management.  I married Melanie Bessire and started to raise my family, a daughter, Katherine Louise, and a son, William Patteson.

We moved back to Louisville where I went into business with my father, Robert P. Adams, Jr selling insurance through Travelers.  I sold the business after my father died and started my own businesses for several years.

After a heart attack and triple by pass in '92, we decided to retire and move to Nevada where our children were living.

My retirement has granted me time with my family, traveling and raising my own vineyard specializing in cabernet and merlot grapes.

For the past 25 years or so, I have been involved as an American Historian in numerous ways. By far, the most enjoyment has come from the American Heritage Inc. side of my life. I have been privileged to know, on a personal level, many of the servants at our White House. I have interacted with over 75 maids, butlers, electricians, valets, seamstresses, ushers, pantry assistants, white house grass cutters, secretaries and on and on. I would buy anything and everything that these retired WHITE HOUSE CAREER STAFFERS owned provided that historical items were previously owned by the President or First Lady. This venture was successful in that I was able to buy and sell the items I chose not to keep for my personal display and collection. The items that I did keep for my personal collection were then displayed permanently or loaned for long time exhibits at such places as Presidential Libraries, to include the Herbert Hoover Presidential library and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The Reagan library displayed borrowed items from my collection for a 9 month period in the 1990s. See my web site for more information on the collections. www.americanheritage1.com

Next, I participated in a serious study of American Sports and the history of Sports in America. This venture lead me to meeting retired NFL, Major League Baseball and numerous Medal winning Olympians. I then was in a position to buy, from a few retired athletes, items that they earned before they were retired. Some, totally broke once their Glory Days were over were willing to sell their Super Bowl ring, World Series ring or in the case of an Olympian, their bronze, silver or Gold Winner's medal. If I had a duplicate World Championship football, basketball, hockey ring or a duplicate Olympic Gold Medal of one specific Olympics, I would sell that duplicate but retain the rest for my collection and or permanent display.
Raleigh Amix at home Among the items in my Americana collection are: Eisenhower's Rolex watch and an original oil painting accomplished by IKE in 1950; Fdr's ties, dress hats, his World War II Cape and his Holy Bible.

The Harry Truman collection consists of many things including HST's Poker Chips, and his Fedora.

Also in the collection is an original painting accomplished by Jacqueline Kennedy for President Kennedy. In addition to that, the collection features JFK'S monogrammed razor set, his Presidential Seal ring and his son's JFK Juniors monogrammed red/white and blue silk shorts worn as an infant in the White House. There are many other items of a personal nature owned and used by numerous other Presidents.

I have, on permanent display, over 40 pieces of White House State Dinner China to include Official State Dinner plates of James K. Polk, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, U.S. grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, Theodore ROOSEVELT, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S., Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan.

Most President's did not have their own State Dinner China. Individual Presidential services were ordered only when the sitting President felt that additional State Dinner China should be designed and added to the White House Inventory. Thus, out of over 40 Presidents no more than 20% plus had their own State Dinner China, for permanent White House use.

Enough of only ME. Along the way, I married a fantastic lady, Hilda, when I just turned 20 in 1958. At that time I was employed by the FBI as J. Edgar Hoover's messenger boy in D.C., while I attended college part-time at American University. Hilda was working for the CIA and I swiped her from that outfit; AND we have been married for 48 years about the time of this AHS56 reunion in 2006. Oh by the way, there were three daughters and a son from this one and only marriage. And from that beginning there are at least 6 Grandchildren and now two Great Grandchildren. RDA- 12/26/05

Alexandria, Va.
After Atherton, I attended the University of Louisville from 1956-1959, where I was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. I met and married my husband, Vince Clephas, while at U. of L.

His career path took us to the Washington, D. C. area when he became News Director of the ABC Radio and TV network affiliate; also International Correspondent and White House Correspondent. We made our home in suburban Alexandria, Virginia, where I pursued my career ambition as full-time wife, homemaker and mother to our two daughters, JoAnn and Dawna. I loved it. Vince’s position provided us entre to the Washington, D. C. Political scene. It was exciting stuff to meet and socialize with the people I read about in the morning papers.

Vince and I separated. I returned to Louisville and the University in 1971 in order to complete my degree. I received my BA in Political Science in May 1972. I entered U. of L. graduate school that fall and received my M.S. degree in December 1974.

I resumed life in VA. My divorce necessitated a career change. I worked 15 years for local government, got my children through high school and college and have attained my ultimate career ambition--RETIREMENT!
I am fortunate enough to have traveled to countries on 5 of 7 continents, most recently to Australia and New Zealand last December. My goal is to visit Antarctica and Africa before I die.

My older daughter, JoAnn is married, lives in Annapolis, MD, and enjoys a successful career in real estate. Thanks to her MBA, daughter Dawna pursues a successful day job, which serves to finance her dream of breeding and raising thoroughbred horses. She and husband live on their farm in S.W. Virginia. I am also the proud grandmother of Dawna’s adorable 2-year-old son.

After High School I went into the Air Force to get training and experience in electronics. During that period I serviced the B-52 aircraft electronics systems.

After that I went to work for NCR to be trained on their main frame computer systems. After 7 months of training on my first Computer system I was assigned to New York City, Toledo, Ohio, and Atlanta, Georgia. After several years in Atlanta and training on several more systems, I received a promotion to our home office in Dayton, Ohio. While in Dayton I spent the next 3 years traveling around the country helping others with their computer problems. In 1970 I received my first management appointment in Atlanta. There heading up the Large Computer System servicing group.

In 1994 there was a downsizing of the management in the service department. So I transferred to the Software Support group in Atlanta. After several project management assignments, our group was to be reassigned to Columbia, South Carolina. Rather than taking the assignment to Columbia I accepted a very generous separation package and retired at that time. I feel very fortunate to have working 41 years for the same company doing a job that I truly enjoyed doing.

The most important things in my life started with my marriage to Margaret in 1964 while working in Atlanta. In 1968 our first child, Jane Ellen was born in Dayton. Jane graduated from Georgia Tech and is now the financial manager for Enterprise Rent A Car in Tampa, Florida and gave us our first Grandchild, Scotty who is now 12. Our second child Walter Carden was born in 1971 in Atlanta. Carden graduated from Georgia Southern and is now the manager of a tree service company responsible for their corporate accounts. Carden gave us our second grandchild Mary Margaret who is now 18 months old.
