Margie Mann Nielsen After graduation I attended Kentucky
Baptist Hospital in Louisville, for nurses training. Together with Diane
Dutschke, Mary Jo Wentworth and Nancy Graham. Diane was my first roommate.
After graduation I moved to Los Angeles, California where I worked in private
duty. One of my patients was George Cukor, the famous Hollywood Director. One
day one of his visitors was Katherine Hepburn. I was working at one time at
Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital when Clark Gable died. I had the pleasure
meeting his wife in the hallway.
I met my future husband, a native of Denmark, when my
roommate and I moved into the same apartment complex. We were married in 1961
in Louisville. We stayed in Los Angeles for a little while, then we moved to
Grand Pass, Oregon, then up to Washington state and have been here ever since.
We have 2 sons, 4 grandchildren and one on way. After Los Angeles, I did not
work outside the home, as I was busy taking care of our two boys. 19 years ago
the kids were gone, so I took a job at the delicatessen at our local
supermarket, and I have the feeling I will retire this year.
My husband
retired 10 years ago, and we have traveled extensively all over the world. We
go to Viet Nam very often, one of our favorite countries. We went this spring,
and right after the reunion, we shall fly to Copenhagen to attend the Rotary
International Convention. Then we take a cruise up the coast of Norway and will
be close to the North pole. |

A few years after leaving Atherton, I met my husband who was
stationed at Fort Knox and lived in Philadelphia, PA. We married and lived in
the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, ran a Photography Studio and raised two
daughters.
Wendy and her husband Jay work for Aetna. They are the
parents of my 5 year old grandson, Daniel Noah who I adore and when I am with
him I get in touch with my inner child which keeps me young. My other daughter,
Robin is a professor in the theatre department of Penn State after graduating
from the Actors Studio in New York City.
The past eight years I have
been a paralegal and notary. I have many interests. I love playing bridge,
canasta, mah jong, and scrabble. I exercise regularly doing weight training,
pilates and cardio. I love going to movies, concerts (Billy Joel in March and
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in June) and the theatre, mostly in New York City.
One of my passions is ballroom dancing and the other passion is
traveling. The picture I have enclosed is from my cruise last summer to
Scandinavia and St. Petersburg, Russia. My next adventure will be to Budapest,
Prague and Vienna. I really enjoy reading about my classmates and seeing
updated photos. I hope everyone takes time to do this. I wish all my classmates
good health, happiness and fun for the rest of our lives.

Wanda Merklein
Magil San Antonio, Tx |
| I have enjoyed being both a wife and mother of one son and
three stepsons. I have been happily married to Arnold Magill, USAF, Ret., for
48 years. During my husbands years of service and since, I have held
offices and committee Chairmanships and received service awards in many groups.
I have achieved their goals as well as being helpful to many people. Boys
Scouts of America, Air Force organizations on the different AF bases (where we
were stationed), Red Cross, Air Force Protestant Chapel, NCO Wives' Club of
Barksdale AFB, and The United Way are the groups in which I have been active.
In Ohio, I organized and led the Telephone Reassurance Organization for the
Council on Aging. I have been President of the Offutt Air Force Base Protestant
Chapel Women's group. |
 |
When the children were in the upper grades of school, I began
my sales associate career with 3 Air Force Bases for a total of 5 years at the
AF Base Exchanges. From my job at Lackland AFB I received an AAFES (Army and
Air Force Exchange Service) Proficiency Award and AAFES Courtesy Award.
After my husband's retirement from the Air Force, I was a sales person,
assistant manager, and manager for Lenny's Dress Shop. After Lenny's went out
of business, I worked as a day care worker for Mount Olive Lutheran Day Care
where I taught 4 and 5-year-old classes
My hobbies, which are knitting,
crafts, and growing African Violets {won blue ribbons in the Medina County
Fair}.
At present, I have had the most exciting experience of my life.
Because, I was told by my parents that they could not afford to send me to
collage. I have always held the dream to reach that goal. This February 19th, I
reached that goal and graduated from Wayland Baptist University.
I have
been mentoring two girls for the last two years at John Glen Elementary School.
Along with Sunday school teaching that I have done since the age of 19, all
over the United States and mentoring, I enjoy life and look forward to any
coming adventure.
Wanda Fay Merklein Magil
When my children were young, I attended Sullivan Business
College, U. of L. and U. of Cincinnati (where Ive lived for 35 years). I
am very proud of my 3 children; they each have 2 degrees. Each of them has 2
great kids, so I have 3 granddaughters and 3 grandsons. Cindy works for Lucent
Technologies in Columbus as Managing Principal, Global Communications and
travels internationally; Janet is at U.C. and Christ Hospital as RN, Transplant
Clinical Research; Michael is a commercial real estate broker at LFI, Inc. as
Project Manager in Chicago.
I work 4 days (Mon.-Thurs.) at Shriners Hospitals for
Children, Cincinnati Burns Institute, in Nutrition. I am longtime single and
lead a very busy life, so Im having a dilemma about if and when to
retire. (Work seems to interfere with my other life.) At present, Im
taking Spanish lessons, round dance lessons (still square dancing for 25 yrs.),
and am a 4-yr. member of the Red Hat Society (as Lady of Spain).
I
travel quite a bitlast Thanksgiving in Florida, 2 weeks in February in
California, will be leaving for St. Louis for 5 days just 2 days after
returning from our June reunion. Then, off to Spain (Madrid & Costa del
Sol) on June 22 for 2 weeksone week at a villa in Mijos with children and
grandkids and then a few days more in Sevilla with friends. Busy June!
So looking forward to being with my Atherton classmates and inviting
them to contact me in Cincinnati that Im even missing my grandsons
high school graduation when Im at the reunion. We have to enjoy each
other while we can and be happy. |

Following Atherton graduation, I spent four years at U of L
where I was active in Pi Beta Phi and graduated with a degree in elementary
education in 1960. I taught for several years and met my husband at Fort Knox
while teaching fifth grade there. After Fort Knox I spent 21 years as an Army
officer's wife, which in those days, was almost a full time job. I was also
busy caring for two boys who were born in 1965 and 1970. We had a lot of fun
during those years but also had to move often. Living four years in Germany was
the highlight of our Army career.
When my husband retired from the Army
we settled in Indianapolis and have lived here ever since. With our boys grown
and my husband pursuing a civilian career, I again became interested in
education and embarked on a career as a reading tutor. It has been very
gratifying to see children grow in their reading skills as some of them had
severe learning disabilities.
Now my husband of 45 years and I are retired. We spend our
days enjoying our four young granddaughters, working in the garden in season,
traveling a little, and hiking with our beloved Corgi.

over the country. He died of cancer in February 1988. BMG2006

What a prologue Atherton High was to our lives' stories! I
LOVED it, and to think it is half a century later already! I can't wait to see
you all.
Life was chapters: 4 years DePauw U., BA; 3 years in Vicenza,
Italy (2 boys born); Lexington, Ky, 3 years and Ft. Bragg, NC two years and
twins born there; up to MA 2 years, and off to Tucson, AZ 5 years, daughter
born there; northwest of Detroit 2 years, and back to Weston, MA for a rather
normal community life 17 years educating kids to investment banking, computer
software managing, university student affairs counseling, and a geologist and
chemist, to boot. There, dear friends, was my career! |

The last 12 years I've created and run an itty bitty Bed
& Breakfast in Sudbury, MA, a real ongoing project making use of the old
mother and catering role (but guests PAY when they leave), and enjoying it.
www.hunthouseinn.com I haven't had a divine two-by-four inspiration for a next
career yet, but I'll bet there is one. I should bone up as travel agent to make
more trips to see the 13 grandchildren!
Although the final chapters of
my life have not yet been written, I'm aware, as we must be, how quickly time
flies and how precious are our days. We appreciate life more now. The epilogue
must include how I loved life, family, and friends, starting with YOU.

After graduating from Atherton in 1956, I attended the
University of Louisville and Duke University. I worked for the state health
department as a physical therapist and public health administrator, and lived
in Frankfort, KY until I retired a few years ago. At that time I moved back to
Louisville to be near my two younger sisters and my brother who are all in
Louisville, and our older sister who lives in southern Indiana.

Carol Mountjoy Lanning After leaving Atherton, I attended
college and in 1960 received, from U of L, a BS degree in Foods &
Nutrition. My first job in Louisville was at Jewish Hospital. I married Ronald
Lanning September 1960 and by 1964 his career took us to Michigan where we
lived for 37 years and raised four children, one boy and three girls.
Michigan I found to be a "melting pot" of nationalities.
Having experienced the ethnic diversity there gave me an in depth understanding
of the world we live in today. I continued to work in hospitals and nursing
homes until retirement in 2001 and a long awaited move back to Louisville. The
family we raised in Michigan had already pursued careers in cities near to
Louisville. It's great to all be in closer proximity to one another and none of
us have any desire to return north to the brutal cold, snowy winters.
My husband and I, currently live at Eastwood in the Polo Fields Sub. We have
left behind all desire to work and are never bored for lack of something to do
here. We have found Louisville has much to offer for those who seek its
resources. We are constantly finding new avenues of learning, thrive on family
ties and have eagerly renewed old friendships as well as forming new
friendships within our neighborhood and church. |
 |
Hobbies I have enjoyed all my life and still have a passion
for are traveling to places I have never been, gardening, my Dad's florist
instilled a love of flowers in me, and genealogy. I have traced my family and
its many branches back to the 1300's. Great history lessons can be learned with
this type research. In 2003, my husband and I made a trip to Bulgaria and on
the way traveled through Great Britain to many of the places of my ancestry. Of
course, my pride and joy are in the present, my seven grandchildren. Carol
