I went from Atherton to Washington and Lee and after a
checkered career, graduated in 1960. I was co-captain for two years in
football. We even won a few. It seems I spent most of my time falling in love
or mooning (another meaning of the word-longing for someone out in the
moonlight) about someone else (pretty much like at Atherton). Girls, honk your
horn if you had a date with Bill Young in high school or college. I enrolled in
Law School at U of L and was plugging along but fate intervened.
| I was called to active duty in the "Berlin Build-up". I could
have claimed another deferment, but thought what the hell, I was bored with law
school, let 's see the open road. Although I had majored in German in college (
I was thinkin' int'l. lawyer or foreign service) it was not a done deal. The
army is different, it'll send a German major to Korea in a heart beat. Anyway I
beat the odds and was shipped to Germany. The last thing my dad said to me was
"Don't bring home a German Wife!" He had traveled in Georgia selling fuel oil
to the army bases and wherever he ate off-post, there were always German
waitresses who had married american GI's and had gotten a divorce as soon as
they had landed in the states. He was just watching out for me, his namesake.
but here I was, a 23 year-old bachelor lieutenant, with a powder-blue triumph
TR-3, who spoke German. Good luck on making it back home a bachelor. |

I arrived in Germany a month before the Berlin Wall was
built, great timing!! The rest of the time I spent in Germany was a
life-changing experience. Met, courted and married in a foreign language. Had a
ball!! Our daughter Heidi was born on the base in Augsburg. My wife Anneliese
wanted to name her Heike or Elke, but how could I not name her Heidi for
Shirley Temple? 43 years later the name is still a perfect fit.
We all
came back to America in June of '64. I went to work for Standard of California
right away and stayed with them for 13 years during which we moved 8
times-Louisville, Ft. Lauderdale where our Bill was born, Orlando, Denver ( 2
times), Hightstown, NJ, while I worked in New York City and Atlanta, before
heading back to Louisville. As we caught our breath in Louisville, we began to
realize that maybe the rat race was not for us. I received an offer to go to
work for a small Asphalt Refinery in Cordova, AL, near Birmingham and just
outside of a small town called Jasper. Our children were just starting Middle
School and High School, respectively, and it just seemed that it was a perfect
time to settle down and that we were destined to live as little fish in a
little pond. We have never looked back. After many job changes just to stay in
Jasper, in '93 I was working in a Buick/Cadillac dealership as a Customer
Service Manager and doing some acting in Community Theatre, singing in a Men's
Chorale and offering my services as an Auctioneer (for free) to various civic
organizations.
I got a chance to work with the Walker County Humane
Society at their auction and we raised over $25,000.00 when they had previously
managed only $10,000 to $12,000. The president of the Humane Society (also
Pres. of Fontaine Trailer Company) said "you know Bill, you have a lot of
personality (don't forget Best Personality , senior class along with Ellen
Pearson Johnson), do you know anything about Advertising?" I said "Hell yes",
so I ended up with a sales and advertising job at Fontaine Trailer Company and
I've been with them ever since. I'm still working full time and planning on
retiring at 70!
Love to play golf, listen to XM Radio-love the Forties
and the Fifties!! I sing in the church choir and still do some acting. And I
play cards on my computer. Mariam Rueff, Dodie Green, Molly Mitchell and twin
brother Dick keep me up on the latest internet humor. Am really looking forward
to seeing my oldest friends!! Bill Young 2006
I graduated from U of L with a double major Biology and P.E.
and in received my Masters at Western Ky. University. I began teaching at
Eastern High School and Coaching Football in the fall of 1961. The head coach
was Charlie Hord formerly at AHS. I coached wrestling for a while. I spent the
better part of 27 years at EHS (4 years at Central). I retired from coaching in
1978 and from teaching in December 1988.
With other partners we started a gym for children in1988. It
failed from lack of interest after 3 years. (We were ahead of the times.) In
1991 I began working part time at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course. At present I
work 5 days a week until noon. I play until 5pm most days. My health is good
and I enjoy traveling, my life is as good as it can be! I have been married to
my second wife, Brenda, for 29 years and we enjoy an incredible life together.
I have three children, Rich Jr. (44), Lawrence (40), and Mary Taylor
(36). They are successful as adults and parents. I have 5 grandchildren 3 boys
& 2 girls.
I fondly remember my days at AHS as very wholesome and
productive. I hope most everyone holds that idea and will be there with us for
our reunion "fifty years after."

When I graduated I had three goals. One was to become a
Registered Nurse. The second was to get a degree. The third was to go to school
out of town. The closest school that offered all three was Ball State
University in Muncie, Indiana.
In August 1960 I came back to Louisville
and began working as a Supervisor at the old Nortons Hospital. In 1963 I
was working at Jewish Hospital and met my husband when his father was a patient
on the floor where I worked. Dick and I were married in August, 1964. |
 |
In 1965-66, I taught at the Baptist Hospital School
of Nursing. In 1967 the first of our two daughters was born. I had been working
at the Health Dept and continued until 1970 when our second daughter was born.
In 1978 I decided to return to my first love, hospital nursing. I went to
Baptist East Hospital to work on the cardiac floor. I retired from there in
2002.
I currently work part-time at Options for Individuals near UofL.
It is a day program for developmentally disabled individuals.
Dick
& I are still married. Dick retired from the Federal Government in 1998
after 32 years in Human Resources. We have two loving grandchildren, ages 16
and 11 who provide us much enjoyment.

Married to Bill over 50 years. We had four children (lost
Jeff at age 12 years). We have four wonderful grandchildren (Ages 7 to 24
years).
I was a stay at home Mom until the mid
70s. I entered work force in 1973. Became Certified Medical
Assistant and worked in Family Practice and Surgical until retirement in 1994.
Enjoy spending much time with our two younger grandchildren (ages 7 and
12 years old). We take trips, see movies, and do theme parks and tourist
attractions. Freedom of saying, Do I want to cook tonight or eat
out? Enjoying Louisvilles Downtown and Waterfront.
Lifes Lesson Learned: Material things mean nothing. You must give
of yourself, help others, love much, be able to say, Im sorry; and
have the Love and Respect of children. Children are the best judges of
character than anyone. Plans: To be healthy enough to attend the 60th class
reunion.
