Lists tour operators and various sanctuaries to visit for bird watching. No publisher listed. Essential Chambers, Stuart Birds of New Zealand Locality Guide Arun Books; South Auckland 2000 (This is sort of a cross between a field guide and a where to find guide. Each bird has a section with a photograph and a list of places where it can be found. In the back there is a description of some of the major birding locations. There is also a list of birds, but this is not really a check list. I could not find a check list of New Zealand birds and so include one in this book.) Albatrosses Pica Press, London 2000 Where To Purchase Guide Books If you are going to find the birds, some of these books are essential. Start looking for them at the bookstore of the American Birding Association. Commercial bookstores carry the Lonely Planet books. In addition to the bird related books listed here, you will probably want to have a general touring guide to each country. The national parks and museums of both New Zeland and Australia have gift shops with a good selection of natural history books. My first stop was at Royal National Park where I purchased several books. I did not get hold of the north Queensland book until I arrived at the Kingfisher Lodge on the Atherton Plateau. It is an important guide book and hard to find.. Books are heavy. I suggest limiting yourself to one Australian Field Guide. I used the Simpson and Day book. At the end of the Australian leg, I shipped all my Australian books home for about US$50. The post office had boxes and wrapping supplies for sale. The clerk was very helpful.
