Terns

Approximately 2400 pair of Arctic Terns nest on Machias Seal Island. Common Terns are increasing their nesting presence. A few Roseate Terns have nested on the island in the past.

The Arctic Tern is distinguished from the Common Tern by the all red bill and longer tail.

The terns establish their nests in the grass on the island and the Canadian Wildlife Service marks each nest with a flag. Visitors must stay on the board walks as the baby terns stray from the nest and are easily stepped on.

Arctic Terns defend their nests ferociously. Visitors are given sticks to prevent the terns from diving at their head. Wear a hat and a raincoat.

This Arctic Tern chick did not survive a careless human footstep.
