Terns
Approximately 2400 pair of Arctic Terns nest on Machias Seal
Island. Common Terns are increasing their nesting presence. A few Roseate Terns
have nested on the island in the past.
 |
The Arctic Tern is distinguished from the Common Tern by the
all red bill and longer tail. |
| The terns establish their nests in the grass on the island
and the Canadian Wildlife Service marks each nest with a flag. Visitors must
stay on the board walks as the baby terns stray from the nest and are easily
stepped on. |
 |
 |
Arctic Terns defend their nests ferociously. Visitors are
given sticks to prevent the terns from diving at their head. Wear a hat and a
raincoat. |

This Arctic Tern chick did not survive a careless human
footstep. |
| This pair of Arctic Terns made their nest in the garden. |

Common Terns nesting near the boat ramp. On my first visit to the
island ten years before, I photographed Arctic Terns on this very same
rock.
