'The Boat
lThe trip was held on a new boat out of Hyannis on the south side of Cape Cod. Owned by Helen H Fishing Fleet. This is one of the best and most comfortable boats I have been on for a pelagic birding trip either here on anywhere in the world. It is fast and maneuverable. The captain was very good at putting the boat on the bird and was usually able to keep the bird so the sun was to the viewers back. The captain and crew worked very well with the trip leaders and were helpful to the passengers.
Usually party fishing boats are obstacle courses for pelagic birders especially when everyone aboard is trying to look at one bird.. On the lower deck, the Helen H. has wider than usual side aisles with a bench for sitting.

The crew put away the fishing gear for this trip which is a big help and safer for the passengers.
Helen H Boat for pelagic birding
Helen H for pelagic birding The front area is spacious and free of clutter. It was a pretty rough ride up there most of the day, but favored by some enthusiastic birders including two guys who seldom left the flying pulpit.

As you can see from the pictures we had moderately choppy seas throughout the trip.
Inside the main cabin there are tables, and suspended bunks. There are more bunks below. The food service area was small but the food looked pretty good. They served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For $20 you got a ticket for all 3 meals. The trouble with the served meals is that you have to eat them when they serve them even if there are birds about.

Pelagic birders are special. Here are pictures to remember.

I don't want these pictures to imply we didn't work hard. It is just that when the birding slowed down, people relaxed and I started taking pictures.
There were several young eagles aboard including these young men. Great to see young people taking an interest in pelagic birding.
